My sister makes what I call "Love Cans" and gives them as gifts. She embellishes cans with interesting items that suit the person she is giving them to (for example if you like playing golf she will put golf items on the cans. To further personalize the can she may add your name and/or something else that fits you). The finished product really shows how much of herself she really puts into these cans. They are great for holding pens, pencils and other office or craft items. They can also be used in the kitchen to house utensils. Their uses are endless. I have them all over my house, they really come in handy. This is also a really neat "green" craft to do. Thanks to Jenny for including easy step by step instructions below in case you want to make some yourself.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING Love Cans:
* Cans may be of any size and preferably have a white interior coating so no finishing is required but make sure your can has a "clean" opening (no jagged edges)
* Clean and dry your can well.
* You can either paint or cover your can with material.
*It's ok to leave the label on the can to paint but if you do have a "bare" can you will want to sand it with sandpaper so the paint will adhere better.
* A nice craft paint brush about 1" wide seems to work best. Most types of paint will work* Making designs with contrasting colors will give your can an interesting background.
* After the paint dries, glue on magazine cutouts, appliques, crafty objects, buttons, ribbons, etc.
* You can pick a theme for your can (holidays, birthday, pets, etc.)
* Use your imagination (glitter can be a great accent)* To give your can a nice finishing touch; glue a piece of craft foam (in a coordinating color) to the bottom of the can (inside and out)
* To preserve your can you will need to Modge Podge, decopage or use a clear varnish when you are done decorating it.
It's fun to fill these cans with nuts, candy, cookies or other small items when giving them as a gift.
You can also use this technique to decorate sturdy boxes.
